These terms are defined according to the meaning ascribed to them in this book.
Abreaction. Expression of a repressed emotion. This release of un- integrated affect is synonymous with catharsis.
Acting-out. Performance, usually under stress, of behavior learned from another situation. Expression of repressed impulses, the manifest behavior often symbolic of earlier stages in develop- ment.
Affect. A synonym for feeling or emotion that expresses an emo- tional state or reaction.
Ambiguity. Lack of clarity. Possibility that an event or feeling can evoke more than one response.
Ambivalence. Uncertainty. Being attracted to and repelled by mu- tually exclusive points simultaneously.
Androgyny. Having psychological characteristics or qualities of both sexes.
Anxiety. Feeling of dread and apprehension, sometimes without a specific or realistic cause.
Association. Recurring relationship between psychological phe- nomena based on prior learning.
