The question, of course, remains of assessing Nandy's controversial vision of the politics of post-colonial culture. My own problem is less with his discussions of the West per se, as with his polemical simplifications of what are much more complex historical processes. Like other critics, I also have difficulties with his vision of the rural and his uncritical stance toward the traditional (cf. Appadurai 1988; Uyangoda 1991).
