David Littlejohn (editor), of San Francisco, studied architecture and English at the University of California at Berkeley, and received his Ph.D. in English at Harvard in 1963, the year he joined the Berkeley faculty. From 1969 to 1997, he taught in the Graduate School of Journalism. Between 1965 and 1975, he served as "Critic at Large" for KQED ( San Francisco) and the PBS network, for whom he wrote and broadcast more than 200 programs or reviews. He was a West Coast arts correspondent for the London Times from 1975 to 1989, and has been serving a similar role for the Wall Street Journal since 1990. He has published more than 300 articles and reviews for newspapers and magazines in the United States, England, Italy, and France. Littlejohn has written or edited twelve earlier books: six on literary subjects; two novels; a genealogical-historical essay; Architect: The Life and Work of Charles W. Moore ( 1984); The Ultimate Art: Essays around and about Opera ( 1992); and The Fate of the English Country House ( 1997). (dtl@uclink4.berkeley.edu)
Eric Gran ( photographer), of San Jose, California, received his B.A. and M.J. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. He has travelled and photographed extensively in Eastern Europe, Asia, and the United States since 1985.
