APPENDIX VTHESE LISTS have been compiled for the most part from editions of penitential
documents and from catalogues of libraries. Accordingly, such details as the
folios and the age of the MSS are sometimes either lacking or doubtful. Relatively few of the MSS, about one-fifth, have been examined by the compiler, for
which are used the symbols given below with their meanings.
The Manuscripts of the Penitentials
As a rule, the older numbers of MSS are included only when the newer ones
have not yet appeared in standard works. For details on the collations of MSS see pp. 56 f., for details on the editions
cited in Section A see the separate introductions to the translations of the penitentials in this volume. For a discussion of the treatment of MSS in the editions
of the penitentials in general and of some important MSS in particular, see
above, pp. 51-61.Although the compiler of these tables has taken pains to check the MSS in
whatever sources were available, accuracy cannot be claimed throughout. But
it is hoped the tables will prove to be a valuable hand list of all known and some
hitherto unidentified MSS of the penitentials. Only in a few cases, notably the
MSS of Alain de Lille Penitential Book, have the modern numbers and locations
not been traced satisfactorily. Beyond that, it is quite probable that a systematic
study of manuscript centers will bring to light new penitential material and
make necessary additions to these lists. Several MSS have never before appeared
in published editions of penitentials. As stated in the Introduction, p. 68 above,
only the penitentials proper are included here.
