The two African- Caribbean students I interviewed were much more dubious about what the marks that we give them reveal about them; as they pointed out to me, their doubt stems from the racism they experienced in their schooling. One of these two students, a mature male, stated quite eloquently that he knew that he had the 'ability' to do well in school, but his racist teachers had refused to recognise his abilities and therefore had made it impossible for him to get a proper education the first time around.

I do not mean to suggest that putting numbers rather than names on essays will make essay marking objective; rather, it will disrupt the flow of knowledge that we collect about students. Of course, in a different system graded assessment might not be necessary.
