-- EMILY DICKINSON, 431

I study myself more than any other subject. That is my metaphysics, that is my physics.

Melvin's Conversation with
the Counselor

This conversation took place years ago while Melvin was still in high school, shortly after his mother's death. He was in the counselor's office at the prompting of his vice principal.

-- Very sorry to hear about your mom, Melvin.

-- Yeah, thanks. Mrs. Scott told me to come by.

-- I know, she said it would be helpful for us to talk.

-- About what?

-- About your mom, about your family, about school, about you.

-- Maybe.

-- I've got time right now.
