that means survival is no longer a question, though as usual it will be a struggle."
18 Yet in a May letter to subscribers, which was published in both the July
and the August-September issue, the editors made an appeal for funds and stated
at great length the necessity of the role Ramparts plays: "The vital principle at
work here is not the liberal creed, 'If it is possible it can be arranged'; it is the
radical commitment that what is necessary can be achieved."
19 Necessary or
not, the voice was to be stilled. The August-September issue led off with a
desperate appeal for funds, "A Matter of Life or Death," signed by all nine
members of the Ramparts staff. It was to be death. That issue was the last.
Though sometimes referred to as a quarterly in these early years, the magazine
was published five times a year, until the fall of 1964, when it became a "monthly," at
first issuing ten numbers annually.
