erally make some use of the ideas of evolution, growth, development, or change--applying them variously to larger or smaller areas of musical activity; they almost inevitably make some reference to relativistic principles; and, to the extent that these various viewpoints are intermixed, they tend toward the pluralistic philosophy of history. The characterization of a particular history of music as one type or the other must be made in terms of a judgment as to the dominant features of the work.33
