Joyce Thelwell is an eighth grade student at Four Road Secondary School. She is the first of five children for Annette Minot and her common law husband Titus Carnegie. Annette is a domestic helper and Titus does seasonal work at Manchioneal Sugar Estates. Annette and Titus live in a rented two-bedroom house with their five children. Joyce is 13 years old, while Timothy, the youngest is 5 years old. Annette and Titus have found it extremely difficult over the years to support their family. As the cost of living rises so does the cost of maintaining a family of seven. Although the family receives food stamps this does not go far enough in providing food for the family.
The cost of books has become so astronomical that the book rental fee charged by Four Road Secondary School can barely be met by Joyce's parents. Many mornings Joyce leaves home without money for lunch. Her hope is always the same, that the cook, Miss Ada would set aside something for her. Miss Ada has been the chief cook at Four Road Secondary since it was opened thirty years ago, so she has a god idea of how many extra lunches to prepare for those students who are unable to pay for their lunches.
Joyce has two friends, Clara Hawkins and Candene Porter. Like Joyce they are both from working class families. Since the start of the new school term, Clara has been bragging to her two friends about her new school bag and shoes which she said were bought from her
