Preface

This edited collection owes much to many people. Most of all, we wish to thank the contributors, of course, many of whom have been active in the Women and Politics research group of the Political Studies Association of Ireland ( PSAI), which was established in 1993. The contributions have been largely drawn from the first three of the annual conferences organised by the research group and held at Trinity College, Dublin. These and subsequent conferences have continued to be popular and lively occasions. We would like to thank all the conference participants and the PSAI for its modest, but essential, financial support. A special thank-you goes to Garrett O'Boyle for copyediting the manuscript; our appreciation also goes to Westview Press for overseeing the publication of this book.
