1934). A five-volume translation of Rashi's classic commentary
on the Talmud with helpful endnotes.

JPS Tanakh and Commentary, published by the Jewish Publication
Society in five volumes ( Philadelphia, 1994). An important and
useful commentary on the Torah filled with insights from tradi-
tional Rabbinic commentaries as well as modern archeology
and anthropology. The excursus at the end of each volume are
invaluable.

The Tanakh, published by the Jewish Publication Society
( Philadelphia, 1988). The most up-to-date, accurate, scholarly
translation of the Hebrew Bible.

Teaching Torah: A Treasury of Insights and Activities, by Sorel Goldberg Loeb
and Barbara Binder Kadden, published by Alternatives in
Religious Education, Inc. ( Denver, 1984). A summary of each
weekly Torah portion along with selections of Rabbinic texts
and suggested activities for children of all ages as well as adults.

Exploring Exodus, by Nahum Sarna, published by Schocken Books
( New York, 1986). A continuation of the literary and anthro-
pological analysis of the Torah, focusing on the book of
Exodus.

Understanding Genesis, by Nahum Sarna, published by Schocken
Books ( New York, 1966). A concise literary and anthropological
analysis of the book of Genesis filled with parallels to other
ancient cultures in the Middle East.
