To Reverend Samuel Miller

Mount Vernon, January 27th: 1800 Revd.

Mrs. Washington has received your letter of the 14th instant, 1 together with the Discourse accompanying it; 2 and in acknowledging the receipt thereof, she requests me to present her best thanks for your goodness in sending her a copy of your performance, which she shall read with great Satisfaction. - And while she sees, with grateful sensibility, the numerous evidences of the warm affection and high veneration in which the dear deceased partner of her heart was held by our nation, she receives, with a feeling heart, the offerings of sympathy made to herself, and looks for consolation to that Divine Source alone, which never fails to grant it, when supplicated with sincerity.

With very great respect I have the honor to be Revd Sir Your most obedt Servt Tobias Lear

From The Earl of Buchan

Madam: Dryburgh Abbey, January 28, 1800

I have this day received from my Brother 1 at London the afflicting tidings of the death of your admirable Husband - my revered Kinsman and Friend. I am not afraid under this sudden & unexpected stroke of divine providence to give vent to the immediate reflexions exerted by it,
