Sir, Mount Vernon, May 6: 1800

Mrs. Washington requests I will communicate to you her best thanks for your polite letter to her of the 15th of April, inclosing (agreeable to the direction of the Standing Committee of the Society of Cincinnati in the State of Rhode Island) a Copy of Doctor Hitchcocks excellent Discourse on an event deeply afflicting to herself and regreted by all, and she begs you will assure the Committee of the sensibility with which she receives this mark of respect & veneration for her late beloved partner. 1

Mrs. Washington has duly received your obliging letter of the 28 of April, with the volume accompanying it; and while requesting me to acknowledge the receipt of them, she begs I will assure you of the sensibility with which she receives this mark of attention, particularly as the subject is one nearest to her heart, and which engrosses her most serious reflections. - She prays you will accept her best wishes for your happiness & prosperity. 1
