Now that tariffs are in place and visible, pressure for tariff reduction will intensify. This, however, may present an opportunity. By increasing efficiency within the industry in the presence of high tariffs, the future impact of reduced tariffs could greatly be mitigated. The pressure to lower tariffs will largely come from the United States where many feel that the new tariffication under GATT will have a significant negative impact on US exports to Canada.
