Gandhian Thought and the
Environmental Movement in India
The prominent environmentalist Anil Agarwal is fond of affirming that in India, "environment is an idea whose time has come." Indeed, environmentalism and environmental action groups have proliferated in India over the past two decades. With over 500 citizen groups advocating one form or another of Green politics, India now has the largest environmental movement in Asia. Moreover, Indian environmentalism is having an impact well beyond the borders of the subcontinent. The widely publicized Chipko movement with its tree-hugging strategy has provided inspiration to forest preservation activists worldwide. More recently, leading Indian environmentalists such as Vandana Shiva, Madhav Gadgil, and Ramachandra Guha have become respected voices in the world environmental movement.
