A CASE STUDY
The Jews Under the Varieties of Imperialism
English, and Napoleonic
Regressive imperialism is characterized by an animus against the rational culture of civilization. It is, as such, a form of rebellion, an anti-civilizational movement, an uprising energized by aggressive drives against cultural constraints. Genocidal behavior appears to be specifically characteristic of the imperialism of regressive societies, and has been so in our own time.
The Nazi imperialism of Adolf Hitler was a regressive imperialism driven by hatred, bestiality, and fanaticism, with none of those constructive, cosmopolitan, and creative emotions that have animated the world's classical imperialist movements, the Alexandrian and the Roman.Though Marxists denounced the Nazis ("Hitlerites" was the term they preferred to avoid the acronym for National Socialism), still in strict Marxist theory the Nazis did not merit the appellation of "imperialist," for from the Marxist standpoint, as I have noted, the essence of imperialism is its extraction of surplus value from a more backward population; a people that is exterminated, however, ceases to be a source of surplus value. Regressive imperialism, moreover, from the Tartar to the Nazi, is not confined to the destruction of backward peoples; it can be directed toward the extermination of societies and peoples either equally or more advanced than their own.
The Jews' experience of imperialism throughout history has, however, mostly been a happy one; from the progressive imperialisms of Alexander and Julius Caesar down to the construction of new cities and new industries in New Zealand and South Africa in the nineteenth century, the Jews have felt their own creative social energies awakened by the imperialist opportunity.
Alexander the Great, as The Jewish Encyclopedia long ago observed, "had probably more influence on the development of Judaism than any one individual not a Jew by race." 1 His name became embellished with all sorts of legends. It was said that Alexander's benevolence to the Jews was founded on a dream he had had in which their high priest advised him to seek dominion over Asia.It was also said that he excused the Jews
