For the travel literature in the period 1776-1932, I have relied heavily on Frank Monaghan, French Travellers in the United States, 1765-1932 ( New York: Antiquarian Press, 1961). Several items which pertain to the period before 1932 and were not listed in Monaghan are contained in the Addendum to Monaghan below. For the period after 1932, I have compiled my own bibliography from Biblio: Catalogue del ouvrages parus en langue francaise dans le monde entier ( 1933- 1976), reviews in major journals, and references in the travel volume themselves. The items pertaining to these years comprise a representative but not a complete list of French travelers in the United States.
