something "wrong" with a person who uses abusive violence on a family member.
To be sure, our national survey of family violence cannot be used to rule out the theory that personal factors are related to violent behavior. But because we found social factors are related to violence we can argue with conviction that personal counseling will never be enough to treat or prevent violence in the home. According to our study, psychological health will not prevent family violence if a person is young, poor, and unemployed. Even if we "cured" the presumed psychological malady of violent individuals, the cure would have no effect if we send them back into the same social environment which influenced them to be violent in the first place.
