PREFACE

This study is the second of two joint doctoral dissertations submitted to the Board of University Studies of the Johns Hopkins University by David Noel Freedman and Frank Moore Cross.

The first: The Evolution of Early Hebrew Orthography: The Epigraphic Evidence was submitted in 1948.

The second: Studies in Ancient Yahwistic Poetry was submitted in 1950.

The second dissertation is here reproduced without change-- except for the correction of typographic errors and normalization of abbreviations and bibliographical references. A Post- scriptum is added to the dissertation, written twenty-five years after the dissertation was submitted, to give our present perspective upon our early work.
