Enduring old age is, indeed, one of the most difficult things the elderly must do. Apart from the physical ailments that afflict many older people, there are behavioral and other mental difficulties to be dealt with. Not that aging inevitably causes mental illness or, for that matter, loss of intelligence. It does not, no more than it causes any of the other diseases and ailments we mentioned in the last chapter.
