A History of Byzantine Music and Hymnography

By Egon Wellesz | Go to book overview

BIBLIOGRAPHY

THE following list of books and articles is intended to provide an introduction to the study of Byzantine musical palaeography, to the method of transcribing, and to Byzantine hymnography. Special reference is made to books on Greek and Byzantine palaeography which contain facsimiles of the ecphonetic and musical notation.

In addition a list is given of manuscripts which have been used for the study of the various phases of Byzantine musical notation. Photographic copies of all these manuscripts are in the hands of the present author. For most of these I have to thank the Royal Danish Academy of Science and Letters; I owe the rest to the courtesy of the National Libraries of Paris, Athens, and Vienna and to the library of Grottaferrata.
