The play was first produced at the Duke's Theatre, Dorset Gardens, in the late autumn of 1677. In 1690 this prologue was used as epilogue to The Widow Ranter: or, The History of Bacon in Virginia, with the only change being the substitution of "Basset" for "Damn'd beasts."
