APPENDIX A
Three Centuries of Reformed Congregations and Institutions in the Carolina Low Country (1685-1985)
Compiled by Joseph B. Martin IIIHISTORICAL INFORMATION FOR the churches and other institutions listed here may be found in "A Guide to Presbyterian Ecclesiastical Names and Places in South Carolina, 1685-1985," South Carolina Historical Magazine90, nos. 1-2 ( January-April 1989): 4-212, and in additions and corrections scheduled for publication in the same magazine in 1993-94.In general, the dates indicated for each church begin with the date of organization and affiliation with a presbyterial association. In some cases, a Reformed congregation's existence predates any such affiliation, and the founding date recognized by the congregation is the date accepted here. Reference to "present" indicates that the organization was still active as of 1985. Presbyterial affiliation is generally straightforward but is sometimes hybrid, sporadic, or unclear. More detailed information about dates and affiliations may be found in the "Guide" (cited above) along with principal historical sources for each church.Changes in county lines and actual moves of churches have resulted in certain churches being resident over time in multiple counties; churches are listed here by their location in a county defined by 1988 boundaries. The counties included are those that constituted Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery at its organization in 1988.
