Setting the Stage
This section's primary goal is to provide the reader with a context in which to better understand why the topic of correctional supervision (prison, probation, and parole) is important for social work practice. The section comprises four chapters. The first, “Setting the Context,” introduces the reader to the general subject. Chapter 2, “Incarceration Profiles and Trends,” provides a detailed picture of who is under correctional supervision and affected by current trends. This picture, although distressing, highlights why the subject is important for the social work profession to address in education and practice. “Substance Abuse and Incarceration,” the third chapter, examines drug-related legislation and its dramatic impact on incarceration, particularly among groups of color. Finally, chapter 4, “The Impact of Correctional Supervision: A Multifaceted Perspective,” focuses on identifying the key needs and issues resulting from correctional supervision. Special attention will be paid to the impact it has on families and informal community institutions.
