Robespierre remains an enigma. No one has been a subject of more discussion. He was viewed with great sympathy during the first part of the nineteenth century. Later on, he was taken to be a monster. In the twentieth century there has been a return of opinion in his favor. Albert Mathiez has been his most fervent apologist. A Society for Robespierrist Studies has been established under his leadership. This admiration has grown between the two world wars to such a point that Robespierre is regarded as the authentic representative of the Revolution, its greatest and purest product. This exaggeration can be explained by the fact that Mathiez and his school have had no experience with revolutionary governments.
