About the Contributors Kathryn H. Au, PhD, associate professor, College of Education, University of Hawaii, 1776 University Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96822. Dr. Au received the PhD in educational psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interest is the school literacy de- velopment of students of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and she has conducted many studies in classrooms with Native Hawaiian students. Her focus in recent years has been on holistic instruction, including the process approach to writing, literature-based instruction, and portfolio as- sessment. She has a continuing interest in culturally responsive instruction and its relationship to students' literacy achievement. Jacquelin Carroll, MEd, 2525 Makauli'i Place, Honolulu, HI 96816. Ms. Carroll is a curriculum developer at Kamehameha Schools, working with elementary school teachers in the area of language arts instruction. She has taught special education classes for students in Grades 7-12. Her re- search interests include student goal-setting and self-evaluation, portfolio as- sessment, and teacher development. Ms. Carroll received her MEd in edu- cational psychology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. David H.
