Preface

Beginnings and endings eventually flow into one another over the
years, but the healing partnerships that have come into being in
the past are very much a part of the present. I am indebted to all
those who have been with me from the beginning and to those
who have journeyed with me along the way, especially my three
sons, Ron, Chris, and Ken Dorn, who have given me uncondi-
tional love.

It has been over twenty-five years since I first met Professor
Camille Brown at UCLA. She provided me with a healing partner-
ship that has enhanced both my personal and academic life. What-
ever I have accomplished over the years is very much related to
her teachings and personal integrity.

The theoretical foundations on which this book rests are the
thoughts of Martin Buber and Maurice Friedman. Their writings
have had a great impact both on my present work as a pain
therapist and during my years as a teacher in the Los Angeles
School District.

I am grateful to my friend Laurel Mannen for preparing the
manuscript for this book. I also wish to express my gratitude to all
my patients in the healing partnership over the years with whom
I have discovered the insights that enabled me to write this book.
