and the Neapolitan dispatches of the date, Pianell, 45 - 46,
which alone would be conclusive. When once the inconsist-
ency in Bixio's dispatch has been detected and the necessary
emendation made it may be said that all the first-hand
authorities who give any dates at all agree that the landing
was at dawn of August 19. The second-hand authorities are
mostly wrong, having followed the error in Bixio's dispatch.

II. Date of Cosenz' Landing

Cosenz crossed from Faro to Favazzina at dawn--on August
22 according to Orsini, 53, on August 20 according to Maison,
44. Both are wrong. He landed on the morning of the 21st,
while Garibaldi was taking Reggio. This is proved by the
date of the Neapolitan dispatches in Pianell, 52-56, by Mori-
sani
, 105; Menghini, 276, and Times, September 4, p. 7, c. 3.
Some of these authorities describe the flotilla as starting over-
night, others at dawn, others not till eight in the morning.
The Times says that the boats left the Faro in two batches,
which may partly account for this inconsistency. What is
certain is that Cosenz' force landed at Favazzina on the
morning of August 21.
