PREFATORY NOTE

THE following chapters on the Nature of
Mind were written as introductory to a
longer work upon which my husband was
engaged up to the time of his last illness.
He desired that they should be published as
they stand in case he should not live to
finish the book I have given them the
name of "The Nature of Mind", because that
is how he described the subject to me when
he began writing; but the complete work
was to have been much more comprehensive
in its scope, and it was his intention that it
should be in the main constructive rather
than critical. For this he had suggested pro-
visionally and had pencilled on the MS. the
title "Thought, Consciousness, Universe."
It seemed better to retain the shorter title
for these preliminary chapters.
