Manuscript Library at Columbia University, sorted through the puppets
in the Dramatic Museum Collection so I could see them and take their
pictures. Amy Trompetter lent me her Punch and Judy puppets, Jonathan
Bell directed me to other puppet resources, Steve Friedman read and com-
mented on an earlier draft of the manuscript, and Ruth Wikler was gener-
ous in sharing her Mime Troupe experiences with me. I am also grateful
to the editors at the University Press of Mississippi for all the time and
effort they have put into this book.

Finally, I would like to thank my family for their encouragement and
patience as I saw this project through to its completion. My mother, Gloria
Orenstein, first exposed me to alternative theater at an early age, and it has
always been a joy sharing my ideas with her. Thanks also to my father,
Stephen Orenstein, my sister, Nadine Orenstein, and my in-laws Grace,
Rod, and Sean Carman. Most of all, I am grateful to my husband, Taylor
Carman, who has supported and inspired me at every step. Without his
help the book would not have been possible.
