losopher first became the subject of biography and commentary. The writer gratefully acknowledges help received, during the period of years since he first became interested in Bacon's philos- ophy, from many historians, biographers, commentators, and editors of documents. Among these he would mention James Spedding, E. A. Abbott, R. W. Church, J. G. Crowther, S. R. Gardiner, John Nichol, and Francis Paget. Use has been made freely of such evidence as they, and others, have collected and interpreted. Sometimes, in the present study, particulars stressed in their assembled evidence have been regarded as the more cogent when disagreement with their verdicts has been the more pronounced. The author thanks three of his colleagues in the University of Toronto for their generous aid in preparing this writing for pub- lication. Professor C. W. Webb drastically reduced the bulk of the manuscript. Professor J. M. O. Wheatley critically examined the typescript and galley prints. Professor William Dray has read the page proof. F. H. A. -x- |
