Nine

In the afternoon after O'Keeffe had taken her usual
nap the two women would be sitting around. O'Keeffe
would sometimes offer to talk about old times, or she
would have Christine read to her. She liked articles
from some magazines, so Christine would go through
the tables of contents and then O'Keeffe would choose
something. She was most likely to pick things that
had to do with what already concerned her. She didn't
care for articles of general interest. Articles on heart
problems or toxemia were sure to interest her.

Christine recalls a number of times when O'Keeffe
would interrupt and say, "Well, that's not particularly
interesting, is it? Why don't we go do something else?"
or, "Don't you have something better to read to me?"

One of the books she enjoyed was The Book of Tea.
She loved for Christine to read from it. She would light
up when she thought of that book. She wouldn't listen
