different sets of materials. Whether the replacement is to be with the
same biotypes, with somewhat different biotypes of the original species,
or with entirely different species, depends on a considerable array of
factors. These factors are within the province of scientific silviculture,
but they cannot be ascertained without a great deal of painstaking research.Biotypic variation is the fundamental mechanism leading to the evolu-
tion of the manifold kinds of organisms with which this world abounds,
and an understanding of it is indispensable in any consideration of the
proper utilization and regeneration of our forests, our most important
replaceable natural resource.
