LOUIS-HENRI-JOSEPH DE BOURBON-CONDÉ, Duc de Bourbon ( 1756-1830). Son
of the above, father of the Duc d'Enghien whom Napoleon ordered to be
shot at Vincennes in 1804. Became the Prince de Condé in 1818 upon the
death of his father. Colonel-General of light infantry.
THE BONAPARTES
NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, born in Ajaccio, Corsica, in 1769, died in St. Helena
in 1821. Began his political career on his return from the Egyptian expedi-
tion by overthrowing the Directory in a coup d'état on November 9, 1799
(18th Brumaire of the year VIII by the Revolutionary calendar). First
Consul in the triumvirate of the Consulate which he created, then sole
consul for life, and finally had himself crowned Emperor on May 18,
1804. Put an end to royalist plotting by the abduction and summary execu-
tion of the Duc d'Enghien. Drew up the Civil Code, new financial system,
established the Bank of France, a new school system, the University.
Made his peace with the Church by signing the Concordat with Pius VII.
Most of his reign taken up by a succession of spectacular campaigns
which carried his armies to the ends of Europe and which were marked
by victories which were triumphs of military art: Austerlitz, Jéna, Eylau,
Friedland, Eckmühl, Wagram. . . . Was variously referred to by his con-
temporaries as the Usurper, the Tyrant, the Ogre, the Enemy of Mankind,
le Petit Caporal, le Petit Tondu, Père la Violette, * and l'Autre (That
Man).
JOSEPH BONAPARTE ( 1768-1844), elder brother of Napoleon. King of Naples
( 1806), King of Spain ( 1808-1813).
LOUIS BONAPARTE ( 1778-1846) brother of Napoleon. King of Holland ( 1806-
1810), married to Hortense de Beauharnais and father of Napoleon III.
MARIE-PAULINE BONAPARTE ( 1780-1825), sister of Napoleon. Married General
Leclerc ( 1801), then Camille Borghese ( 1803) and was created Duchesse
de Guastalla
in 1806. Famous for her many love affairs.
CAROLINE-MARIE-ANNONCIADE BONAPARTE. ( 1782-1839), sister of Napoleon.
Married Joachim Murat ( 1800) and became Grande Duchesse de Berg,
and de Clèves, then Queen of Naples.
JÉRÔME BONAPARTE ( 1784-1860), youngest brother of Napoleon. King of West-
phalia ( 1807-1813).
JOSÉPHINE TASCHER DE LA PAGERIE DE BEAUHARNAIS ( 1763-1814). Married the
Vicomte de Beauharnais in 1779 (who died on the scaffold in 1794), then
Napoleon Bonaparte in 1796. Napoleon divorced her in 1809.

return to power by the time the violets bloomed again, and violets became a
Bonapartist emblem.
