ate and graduate students of the University. Ar- rangements were made by the late Dr. Albert S. Cook to have the essay included in the Yale Studies in English Series, but a prolonged illness on the part of the author made it impossible for him to edit the study for publication.
Mr. Webb's study is the pioneer scholarly work upon Lanier's poetry and theories of prosody, and antedates Professor Mims's book which was pub- lished in 1905. The work shows obvious merit and sound critical judgment. There is need for a treat- ment which emphasizes Lanier's contribution to poetry and prosody. It was considered, therefore, a distinct contribution to scholarship to publish the manuscript and make it available for the scholar and the general reader.
Although the original work was not altered, nor, indeed, are any changes made necessary by the passage of time, it nevertheless seemed logical and scholarly to consider Lanier today as a poet and verse theorist in the light of modern criticism. This study was made by the writer of the second essay in the book, "Lanier's Place as an American Poet and Prosodist."
