faculty of "Camp Dartmouth": Fred I. Greenstein, Erwin Hargrove, William
Riker, Evelyn Fink, Bernard Bass, Roger Masters, and Denis Sullivan. Of
course, we cannot forget our fellow participants in the conference who made
it especially enjoyable.

We also want to thank Bob Denton, the general editor of the Praeger
Series in the Presidential Studies, Anne Kiefer, our editor, Stephen Hatem,
production editor, and the entire staff at Praeger Publishers for their support
and assistance. This is not the first book that either of the editors has done
with Praeger; their professional and courteous handling of authors and books
makes it easy to come back again.

Every edited volume is obviously a group effort, but we as editors take
final responsibility for this book. While the analyses presented in the various
chapters reflect the judgment of the individual contributors, as editors we
have endeavored to make sure that each chapter is clear and to the point.
If the reader should disagree with sorpething that follows, that is a matter
for the author in question. The organization, selection, and presentation of
the book is the editors' fault or achievement, whichever the case may be.
