For the international aspects of the war, some general reference ma- terials supplement those cited in specific chapters of this book. Patricia Kennedy Grimsted ( 1993) has edited a directory of the Russian archives in Moscow and St. Petersburg, which includes an essay on Russian archives in transition, a valuable guide to scholars working in Russia or reading about studies based on those archives. William Moss ( 1993) has prepared a guide to the archives in the People's Republic of China, with interesting information on these documents. The CCP Research Newsletter of the Chi- nese Communist Research Group has frequent articles about Chinese ar- chives and bibliographies, such as those by Odd Arne Westad ( 1992) and Michael Schonhals ( 1991). A historical bibliography, the United States in East Asia ( 1985), was published by ABC-Clio press. An annotated bibli- ography on Japan's period of occupation, compiled by Robert E. Ward and Frank Shulman ( 1974), covers English-language sources on the topic and includes information on documentary materials in the United States. The Cumulative Bibliography of Asian Studies ( 1972- 1973), which is updated annually by the Association for Asian Studies, includes topics on Korea. Han-Kyo Kim ( 1980) is a scholar's guide to Korea, and George Ginsburgs ( 1973) edited Soviet Works on Korea, 1945- 1970. In military history, the best guide to U.S. sources is edited by Robin Higham ( 1975) and with Donald J. Mrozek three supplements published in 1981, 1986, and 1993. Higham's volumes have chapters written by var- ious authorities who provide data on each of the armed forces as well as on science and technology, disarmament, museums, and defense policy and diplomacy. Susan Kinnel ( 1986) has an annotated, selected military bibliography; William M. Arkin ( 1981), a guide to current military affairs; and John Jessup and Robert Coakley ( 1979), a guide to the study of military history. John Greenwood and associates have compiled a bibli- ography, American Defense Policy since 1945 ( 1973); Richard Burt and Geoffrey Kent ( 1974) edited a bibliography on congressional hearings on defense policy; and Herbert Tillema ( 1991), a bibliography on armed forces conflicts since 1945. For the U.S. armed forces, an index to periodical articles has been published at regular intervals since 1949 by the U.S. Air Force, Air Uni- versity. Samuel Miller ( 1978) has an "aerospace" bibliography and Paola Coletta ( 1988) an annotated bibliography of naval history. For the U.S. Army, the works of Jessup and Coakley ( 1979) and Kinnel ( 1986) should be consulted. Eugene L. Rasor ( 1994) compiled a bibliography on Gen- eral Douglas MacArthur. Paul Edwards ( 1993) has a special bibliography on the war in the Pusan perimeter, where the initial UN Command action became necessary to save South Korea. Arthur Larson ( 1973) has a guide to national security sources, and Morton Halperin ( 1962) bibliography on limited war is valuable because the Korean War appeared to be the first U.S. limited war in contrast to total victory. -5- |
