The Peanut Butter and Nut Processors Association is a national trade asso-
ciation that represents approximately 80 percent of the nation's peanut-processing
industries--which include peanut butter manufacturers, producers of various
confections, peanut roasters and salters, and manufacturers of other peanut prod-
ucts--as well as various processors and packers of tree nuts and mixed nuts.
Traditionally, the group has sought to represent the mutual interests of its mem-
bers through active communication with the public, with other food industries,
and with other segments of the peanut and tree nut industries. Faced, however,
during the past two decades, with a market that is strictly regulated by the federal
government, the group's major purpose has recently been more focused on public
affairs. Protecting the interests of its members means carefully surveying gov-
ernmental actions, informing members of relevant developments, and repre-
senting the interests of its members before Congress.


ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT

The Peanut Butter and Nut Processors Association, originally known as the
Peanut Butter Manufacturers Association, was founded in July 1939. The group
