In the minds of many people, these couples have crossed the line--they
have violated generations of traditions and the implications threaten
the very foundation of social life in their communities.

While the actual impact is far short of these dramatic depictions, the
practical difficulties of participating in an interracial relationship are
clearly documented in this study. Our goal is to offer a sociological
account of what is taking place as well as trying to understand how and
in what ways Black/White couples manage their lives.
