We were gratified to be able to secure as participants rep-
resentatives of the following major disciplines concerned with
linguistic activity:

Philosophy: Dr. Susanne Langer, Connecticut College;
Literary Criticism: Dr. William Carter, Clark University;
Linguistics: Dr. Morris Halle, Massachusetts Institute of
Technology,
Dr. Roman Jakobson, Harvard University,
Dr. Richard Reid, Clark University,
Dr. Hans Sperber, Ohio State University;
Psychology: Dr. Joe Adams, Bryn Mawr College,
Dr. Solomon Asch, Swarthmore College,
Dr. Franklin Fearing, University of California, L.A.,
Dr. Bernard Kaplan, Clark University,
Dr. Heinz Werner, Clark University;
Psychiatry: Dr. Silvano Arieti, N.Y. State University,
College of Medicine.

It was believed that this group of participants would, in
free discussion, contribute to the general clarification of the
concept of "expressive language" by familiarizing each other
with their particular approaches through application to certain
concrete problems.

The discussions were oriented around the presentation of
prepared papers by eight of the participants. Because of limita-
tions of time and space, the present monograph presents only the
prepared papers.

The papers have been arranged in such a way that the more
general problems are presented first, followed by presentations
dealing with relatively more specific or applied areas, both
normal and psychopathological.

It is hoped that the papers, although focussed on only
certain aspects of "expressive language" will convey the general
significance of the problem of such language activity and also
will serve to acquaint scholars of various disciplines with the
multiplicity of approaches and techniques for its investigation.
