It remains for us to thank all those who have helped us to
see the book through the Press. The Principal of Brasenose,
Dr H. M. Last, gave us encouragement and advice from the
beginning and found the time to read a set of proofs. Another
of Professor Baynes' friends, Mr H. St. L. B. Moss, consented
to prepare the Index. We also received much help in proof-
reading from Professor Joan Hussey, Miss M. S. Drower, Mr
R. Browning and Dr J. Morris. Finally we are greatly indebted
to the personal interest in this book shown by the secretary
to the Athlone Press, Mr W. D. Hogarth.
