Finally, we owe very much to two generations of students at the Army War
College who enrolled in the course "War in the Ancient World" and who read
each of the chapters and suggested the various "lessons of war." These students
were lieutenant colonels and colonels who had recently left command of their
respective battalions, where the lessons of leadership and command were fore-
most in their minds. As genuine combat commanders (many had served in Des-
ert Storm), these officers were uniquely placed to instruct their professors in the
strategic and tactical lessons of war. And we thank them for it.
