narrative development or thematic allegations of
the operas and ballets are again traced scene by
scene or act by act. Basic bibliographies are
provided again to offer ready access to
supplementary information about the individuals
and compositions under scrutiny. Page references
are provided for important periodicals and books
for the convenience of researchers and more casual
readers. The usual cross references to other
volumes are provided once again. An asterisk
after a proper name indicates that an entry for
the starred name is to be found in this volume.
Thus, Les Huguenots* signals that this famous
Mayerbeer work is discussed herein.

The appendix to this volume presents a
bibliographical listing of all lyric and
choreographic works first performed at the Opéra
between 1 January 1816 and 1 August 1915. This
first of six lists includes the entire repertory
and gives the composer, librettist, and
choreographer contributing to the creation of each
composition as well as its title, genre, and the
date of its initial performance at the Opéra. The
five subsequent bibliographies offer separate
chronologically arranged listings for the lyric
repertory, the balletic repertory, nonoperatic
lyric offerings, dramatic works, and light stage
offering.

It must be stated here next that the author
of the present encyclopedia has relied heavily
upon a number of standard reference books. The
especially useful titles have been La Grande
Encyclopédie
( 1886- 1902) in 31 vols., Pierre Larousse's
Grand dictionnaire universel du XIXe
siècle
( 1866- 1890) in 15 vols. with two
supplementary vols., Die Musik in Geschicte und
Gegenwart: allgemeine Enzyklopíie der Musik

( 1949- 1979) in 17 vols., the Biographie
universelle ancienne et moderne
in 40 vols., the
incomplete Dictionnaire de biographie française
( 1933-) in 14 vols., and the especially valuable
Enciclopedia dello spettacolo ( 1954-62) in 9
volumes. More specialized in certain respects and
quite as useful have been the surveys,
dictionaries, and handbooks of ballet, music, or
opera compiled by Baril, Beaumont, Cande,
Chouguet, Chujoy, Compardon, Gourret, Guest,
Hofmann, Koegler, Migel, Mondadori, Nanquette,
