of a remake is similar to that of the original, the remake is given less space. The date of release, releasing company or distributor appear after the title. The direc- tor (Dir.), screenwriter (Sc.) and major cast credits follow, as in this example: ACQUITTED ( 1929), Col. Dir. Frank Strayer; Sc. Keene Thompson, James Seymour; Cast includes : Lloyd Hughes, Sam Hardy, Margaret Livingston, Charles Wilson, George Rigas. Historical sources sometimes fail to list the director, screenwriter or cast credits. Where more recently published references have corrected these omis- sions, these additions have been added to the film guide. On occasion, a person's name is spelled differently from one film to another. This guide, as a general rule, has kept the spelling of names uniform so that readers will not falsely as- sume that a different spelling implies another person. The length of a film entry does not necessarily reflect upon the work's artistic quality. A particular aspect of a low-budget, routine drama may have a special interest that lends itself to greater analysis and discussion. Also, the circum- stances under which a film was made or how it was accepted upon its release may be of particular concern. These points were taken into account in presenting the entries. The authors hope that the reader will find the appendixes and Index helpful. Appendix A lists the major crime series. Appendix B lists serials in which crime and/or criminals play a major role. The Index lists directors, screenwriters and principal players.
