Morris Philipson was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1926. After spending a year at the Université de Paris, he did his under- graduate and master's work at the University of Chicago, and received his doctorate from Columbia University. In 1952 he was a teaching fellow in the humanities program at the College of the University of Chicago. He has taught English literature, cultural history, and philosophy at Hofstra College, the Juilliard School of Music, and Hunter College. For 1956-195h he was awarded a Fulbright fellowship to study at the University of Munich. Dr. Philipson edited the Meridian volume of Aldous Huxley, On Art and Artists ( 1960), and has published articles and stories in, among other publications, The Reporter, Esquire, The Journal of Philosophy, Commonweal, Saturday Review, and New Directions 16. He is presently editor of Vintage Books, and a member of the editorial staff of Random House, Inc.
