EDITOR'S PREFACE

The present volume of essays on antisemitism is an out-
growth of a symposium on antisemitism arranged by the
Conference on Jewish Relations in 1935. The essays by
Ralph Marcus, Solomon Grayzel, Joseph Reider, Guido Kisch,
Samuel Rosenblatt, I. S. Wechsler, Jacob R. Marcus and Z.
Diesendruck were prepared for publication from the papers
presented at this symposium. They have, in the main, been
allowed to stand in the more informal presentation in which
they were originally prepared. The essays by Mark Vishniak,
Raphael Mahler and B. Weinryb were written specially for
this volume. Only the paper by the late Professor Diesen-
druck has been previously published (see Jewish Social Stu-
dies
, vol. i, 1939, p. 399-408).

The first part of the volume deals with historical studies
of antisemitism in particular epochs or geographical regions;
the second part brings together several essays which aim at a
more general and universal analysis of this momentous prob-
lem. It is important to point out to the reader, however, that
this volume does not attempt to present a comprehensive
treatment of the entire subject of antisemitism, either his-
torically or analytically. Many important epochs or geograph-
ical areas in which antisemitism has prevailed are not touched
upon here. The editors do feel, however, that the essays here
collected represent a fresh approach to some of the older
problems of antisemitism or, in other cases, new treatments of
hitherto neglected aspects of the subject. In the same way no
attempt has been made in this volume to treat of the subject
