FEW historians have known the period of the Cru-
sades as thoroughly as did Dana C. Munro. This
period was the subject of his special research through-
out his active life. Hundreds of graduate students
were initiated into historical research upon various
phases of the Crusades in his seminar at the Universi-
ties of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and at Princeton
University. Many of these scholars continued their
interest in this field and with his guidance and ad-
vice completed special studies for publication as
articles, monographs, and books. His advice was
sought also by others interested in this period of his-
tory. Few, if any, serious works on the Crusades or
related problems were published in this country dur-
ing the past generation which were not indebted to
him for inspiration, guidance, or advice. This debt
was partially recognized in the tribute paid him on
his retirement from the presidency of the American
Historical Association. On that occasion he was pre-
sented with the manuscript copy of The Crusades and
Other Historical Essays by former students of his. A
more complete record of this indebtedness must be
sought in hundreds of studies which have been pub-
lished in this country during the past forty years.

It was the hope of all interested in the period that
