So far as I am aware, there is no other book which covers quite the same
field as this one. There are, however, many books which overlap various
parts of the field. I have profited from several of these, and I hope that full
acknowledgement has been made, both in the text and in the bibliography.

Professor Daniel Day Williams, of Union Theological Seminary, New
York, read the whole book in typescript, and suggested many improve-
ments. Further valuable comments were received from Professor John
McIntyre, of the University of Edinburgh, and Professor Ian T. Ramsey,
