fields to supply introductions to the book and its various parts. It is
a warm satisfaction to see thus set forth fresh responses to Miss
Addams' thought and personality.

The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom wishes
to express particular appreciation to Professor William L. Neumann
of Goucher College for his generosity as consulting editor, his
valuable suggestions and criticisms. The professional editorial ex-
perience offered by Lois Leighton Comings has also been gratefully
accepted.

Collection of the extracts has been greatly assisted by the co-
operation of the staff of the Swarthmore College Peace Collection,
which has an unrivaled library of Jane Addams' books and papers,
by the Free Library of Philadelphia, and by the Friends Free Li-
brary of Germantown. Indebtedness is acknowledged for the help
given throughout the preparation of the book by Claire Holcomb
Walsh of the Centennial Committee staff; special mention must also
be made of the long hours contributed by members of the WILPF
as volunteer typists of the material and the extra work carried at
the Philadelphia office of the WILPF.

Certain practices adopted in dealing with the reprinting of the
extracts should be explained. Many, but not all, of the chapter and
section headings have been taken from Jane Addams' writings. The
boldface figures in brackets at the beginning of each series of quota-
tions indicate the year of publication of the paragraphs that follow.
The sources of the excerpts are given in the section of References
at the end of the book.

The original texts have been reprinted exactly with the following
exceptions: (1) the single ellipsis indication (. . .) has been used
for all omissions, regardless of length; (2) when a quotation begins
in the middle of its sentence without immediate reference to what
precedes, a capital letter has been used for the first word; (3)
obvious typographical errors and misspellings have been corrected,
including the titles of a few organizations; and (4) a minimum of
changes have been made in punctuation to facilitate understanding.

The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom
acknowledges with thanks the courteous permission of the heirs of
Jane Addams and the following publishers to use excerpts from Jane
Addams' writings in the books listed:
