A CHRONOLOGY OF OSCAR WILDE
1854 Oscar Wilde born in Dublin, second son of Dr (later Sir) Wil-
liam Wilde and Jane Francesca Elgee, nationalist writer under
the pen-name ' Speranza'.
1864 Enters Portora Royal School, Enniskillen.
1867 Death of Wilde's younger sister Isola, aged eight.
1871 Enters Trinity College, Dublin.
1874 Wins Berkeley Gold Medal for Greek. Matriculates, with a
scholarship, at Magdalen College, Oxford.
1875 Summer: visits Italy with J. P. Mahaffy.
1876 Sir William Wilde dies. Wilde takes a First Class in Classical
Moderations.
1877 Visits Greece with Mahaffy, returns by Rome.
1878 Wins the Newdigate Prize for his poem Ravenna. Takes a First
Class in Litterae Humaniores.
1879 Settles in London.
1881 Poems published.
1882 Spends year lecturing in United States and Canada.
1883 Paris: lectures in England.
1884 Marries Constance Lloyd; settles in Chelsea.
1885 Son Cyril born.
1886 Son Vyvyan born.
1887-89 Edits The Woman's World.
1888 The Happy Prince and Other Tales published.
1889 Publishes "The Portrait of Mr. W. H." in Blackwood's.
1890 The Picture of Dorian Gray, first version, in Lippincott's Monthly
Magazine
.
1891 The Duchess of Padua is produced in New York as Guido Fer-
ranti. Publication of Intentions, Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and
Other Stories
, The Picture of Dorian Gray and A House of
Pomegranates

1892 Lady Windermere's Fan produced. Salome is refused a licence for
production by Sarah Bernhardt.
